Tomorrow Pamplona

Jan van Mersbergen

A boxer runs through the town. He runs along a street with tall houses on both sides. He shoots between the parked cars, runs straight across an intersection, takes a bike path, goes over a bridge and follows the tram rails around the bend – every passerby will think he is just running, but he’s running faster than usual, his breathing is uncontrolled, and his eyes are large.

Danny is hitching in the rain. His boxing career is over and he is desperately looking for a new life. Robert is on his way to Pamplona on his annual visit to the bull-running when he picks up Danny from the roadside. Danny passively and silently accompanies him, but has he made the best choice?

‘No "grace under pressure". Rather, Danny and Robert, both alienated, replace normal feelings with their different obsessions.’
The Independent

‘An impressive work from a leading Dutch writer.’ – Daily Mail

Tomorrow Pamplona lives up to its promises, an exciting, road movie of a story. Van Mersbergen writes in a penetratingly poetic, forceful sort of prose.’ – VPRO Gids

‘The sensual and yet tight style makes Tomorrow Pamplona an intense reading experience. You can feel something smouldering underneath those ordinary words, those short sentences.’ – De Morgen
