The Missing

Lot Vekemans

When Simon finally gives in to his sisters questions, and his nephew comes to stay with him in Canada, it doesn’t take long for things to go wrong between uncle and nephew. The boy mainly just annoys him by watching tv, ordering pizzas and nagging Simon about wanting to go to the Rockies. Finally, Simon agrees: a day trip it is, not more.
In a fast food restaurant they meet two enthusiastic hikers, father and son. They take the boy along on a day tour while Simon stays behind in the mountain village. When the three return, they are eager to go back into the mountains the following weekend – while Simon simply can’t wait to get back home. The dinner ends in a fight.
Simon feels deeply humiliated. When he wakes up the next morning, the hiking trio is nowhere to be found. They’ve checked out without paying the bill.
